The 6 Best Reasons to Make the Limestone Coast Your Vacation Destination in 2023

Ah, Australia. From the Top End to the bottom of the world, this beautiful land and its many different regions and climates are some of the most unique our planet has to offer. Nowhere is that more true than here in South Australia’s gorgeous Limestone Coast.

Tucked in the southeastern pocket of the state, South Australia’s Limestone Coast region stretches from the Lower Murray all the way down to the coast of the Southern Ocean.

So, why should you spend your hard-earned holiday here with us? Let us count the ways!

  1. There’s more to do: Our population has grown over the past few years, and so have our offerings! Mount Gambier, in addition to being South Australia’s second largest city, was also one of the most moved-to places in Australia in 2022, experiencing an 85% increase in migration from March 2021 to March 2022, according to a recent Commbank study. We recently opened the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre, offering beautiful workout facilities as well as indoor and outdoor pools, including a splash pad for the kids. If you’re with the family and need a rainy day activity, visiting Wulanda is the perfect way to still have your holiday fun even if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

  2. There’s more to eat: With new offerings like Little Rippa Brewing Co, Nacho Average Taco Truck and Elementary by Soulco opening recently, and new entrants like Sushi Train poised to join the restaurant scene soon, you should have plenty to tantalise your taste buds during your visit to the Mount Gambier region.

  3. There’s more to see: Our region boasts countless sinkholes and volcanic craters — remnants of massive geologic activity from long ago. While none of these are new this year (in fact, they’re very, very old!), it’s always a good time to experience the other-worldly beauty that reminds us just how small we are in the scheme of our vast and stunning planet. Plus, just 5 minutes drive from Mountain Path Meadows, you can swim in a sinkhole. How cool is that?!

For Non-Aussies

…And for our international audience, there’s no better time to make Australia — and more specifically, the state of South Australia — your international vacation destination in 2023! Why? Let us count out a few reasons just for you:

  • The exchange rate is in your favor…or favour, as we’d say here! At the time of writing this blog post, every $1 in U.S. dollars equates to $1.40 in Australian dollars. Translation? You’ll get more bang for your buck here than at home. Be sure to check the current exchange rate for the most accurate information.

  • We’ve received some impressive accolades. Did you know South Australia’s very own Kangaroo Island was named amongst the 52 Places to Travel in 2023 by the New York Times? The unique island took seventh place on the list this year, and we Mighty South Aussies are pretty stoked about it. Not only that, Kangaroo Island was also awarded the crown of Australia’s Best Beach in 2023. In fact, we here at Mountain Path Meadows think KI is so great that we might recommend a Kangaroo Island to Mount Schank road trip. The 8-hour journey takes you past top destinations such as Victor Harbor, Adelaide, The Coorong National Park, Cape Jaffa, and Robe (one of the most adorable seaside holiday towns you’ll see).

  • We have the best wine in the world. No, really! Wine lovers, rejoice. A Clare Valley-based winery, Taylors Estate and their 2020 Shiraz, won the title of International Champion 2022 at the annual VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition in Argentina back in September. Maybe you’re more of a Cabernet person? The Coonawarra wine region has you covered with its famous terra rossa producing some of the best Cabernets in the world.

So there you have it! If those aren’t great reasons to book your next holiday, how about the prospect of staying in a bucket-list-level accommodation? We have you covered here at Mountain Path Meadows, literally! Head over to Airbnb to book our one-of-a-kind timber geodesic glamping dome — the only in South Australia.
